In this article, I share my professional journey with you — a path that led me to become a business analyst despite numerous challenges and difficult decisions that tested my resolve at every turn.

Early encounters with coding

My journey began in high school, where I first encountered the world of coding. Struggling to grasp the nuances of programming, I often resorted to memorizing code to pass exams. This struggle laid the foundation for my decision to pursue a career outside the traditional coding realm.

Choosing an undergraduate path

As I pondered my future during my undergraduate years, I sought a field that required minimal coding. With interests in drawing and mathematics, I explored several engineering disciplines before the booming tech sector caught my attention. Influenced by my uncle, a lead consultant in tech, I decided to carve a niche for myself in this sector without a direct coding background. Despite modest high school grades, I chose “Electronics and Communication Engineering,” viewing it as my entry point into the tech world.

The job market reality

After graduating with First Class honors, I soon faced the grim reality of a job market hit by the recession. With no campus placements at my college, I found myself competing with thousands for a position at Cognizant Technology Solutions, a tech company. My success in landing the role of programmer analyst was bittersweet, since it came with uncertainties about the specific technologies I would be working with. Though I was eager to support my family financially, I yearned for a role that aligned more closely with my strengths and interests.

MBA: A turning point

Faced with a crucial decision, I chose to pursue an MBA, turning down the programmer analyst position. This decision, difficult as it was, marked a key moment in my career trajectory.

The MBA program was a transformative experience. I excelled academically, ranking third in my college, and I seized every opportunity to develop personally and professionally. Through networking, leading workshops, and researching tech market opportunities for MBA graduates, I identified potential career paths including business analyst, PMO, and operation manager. Despite the generic job descriptions and roles offered during my college's placement season, I remained committed to finding a role that truly matched my aspirations, even if it meant declining offers that didn't fit.

Facing challenges head on

After graduation, the absence of job offers tested my resolve. Unsupported by my college's placement system, I leaned heavily on my family's support and began to more deeply explore the roles that I had identified. My determination led me to an internship with a startup — a role that offered no stipend but valuable experience in business analysis.

At the internship's end, the road to securing a permanent business analyst position was fraught with rejection. After numerous interviews, my perseverance was finally rewarded with an offer from a fast-growing startup in my city. This success was a testament to the resilience and hard work I had invested, as well as the hardships I had endured.

Lessons learned and paths taken

Today, with over seven years of experience in my chosen field, my career has spanned various clients and projects, from big MNCs to innovative startups. This journey would not have been possible without a steadfast commitment to my goals, the support of my family, and a willingness to learn from each setback.

Reflections on a journey well-travelled

My professional path has been anything but linear. From early struggles with coding to strategic decisions about my education and career, each step has been guided by a deep sense of purpose and a refusal to give up in the face of adversity. My journey highlights the importance of resilience, strategic decision-making, and the support of those around us. It underscores the integral role of personal growth in professional success, and the fulfilment that comes from staying true to oneself.

My story is a reminder that life is a journey filled with ups and downs. By embracing the journey, learning from our experiences, and persevering through challenges, we can navigate the complexities of professional growth and find joy and satisfaction in our chosen paths.
